-
-
- OK, now let me sort through all of this. If, as you say, photons
- are 'just another particle', then how come it BEHAVES so differently from any
- other. I admit that it is very convenient to think of light and energy as
- consisting of little bundles of energy called photons because of the way it
- fits into the theories on quantum mechanics, etc. BUT...I think it is
- carrying the theme a bit far to just lump them into the same category as other
- particles.
-
- For one thing, as Rick Ellis pointed out, it is difficult to observe
- the collision of photons. For another, photons exhibit a wavelength based on
- their "energy level."
-
- Moreover, several other folks on this echo feel that there is no
- need to think of the existence of anti-photons. Where is the universal
- parity?
-
- Why even attempt to consider photons as 'just another particle',
- when the properties of said particle are not even CLOSE to those of other
- subatomic particles?
-

-
- One wonders about a lot of things. I've decided to jump in here after reading
- all the responses to your original thesis.
-
- I'm somewhat troubled by it all. Some of the respondees answered you in the
- same condescending manner in which the so-called "classical physicists"
- answered the proponents of sub-atomic theory. Now these "enlightened"
- classicists - far from having learned anything from their experience - repeat
- the same old litany about "consistancy" and "conformity to present theory".
- They go on to describe how Einstein included Newtons Theory - as a "special
- case". The whole thing about it all is that for "sure" nothing is "sure".
- The Uncertainty Principle alone should give one pause. And then there's the
- whole question about light and what it is (or isn't) and photons themselves.
-
- Firstly, a photon supposedly has no mass. Well, it doesn't have "rest" mass
- since it doesn't sit still; so you can't weigh it. But it does have something
- akin to mass - while it's moving, which is all it does. If that is so, how is
- it that it travels at the speed of light? If it does have mass, why isn't
- that mass infinite? You see, Einsteins Special theory suggests that as an
- object is accelerated to the velocity of light, its mass increases. The
- so-called limiting factor of the speed of light is based on that theory since
- the mass is increased until it becomes infinite. Since it would take an
- infinite amount of energy to accelerate an object of an infinite mass to the
- speed of light and beyond ... There's the rub. How is it that something like
- a photon can exist? Is it a "special case"? And if IT'S a special case - how
- do we know that there are no others? There are some other problems with
- Einsteins Theory but it stands because it's the best that we have at
- explaining MOST of what we OBSERVE to be happpening in the universe. Except
- that it doesn't when we get to the sub-atomic level, and so on.
-
- I would agree that "mindless" speculation is worthless, but I have difficulty
- describing what is "mindless" - especially in view of the history of
- scientific discovery. Discipline IS necessary in maintaining a
- single-mindedness of purpose when studying some phenomenon or other but the
- term does not imply blindness to alternatives. The disease of conservatism
- for its own sake, is terminal - there is NO cure. Fortunately, not all are so
- afflicted.

-
- Finishing the boring from the front means that you have to carefully center
- and register the partially finished blank before you start drilling.
- Otherwise you end up with an egg-shaped hole or a keyhole. By all means do
- not complete the hole from the back but do leave material on the front before

- Not really. Black holes still have rather high gravitational fields which can
- be detected in different ways (the orbit of a companion object, such as a
- normal star). I believe that particles pulled into the hole give off high
- energy radiation (gamma rays, etc.) as they are accelerated, which can be
- detected.
-
- Also, if one was "lucky" enough to be near a hole it might be possible to find
- it by looking for a dark area without stars, or by seeing the hole occult a
- star. Whenever a star passed behind the hole there would be a momentary halo
- of light around the hole as the light from the star was bent around the hole
- by the high gravity.

- Greetings!
- In 'ASTRONOMY' mag (July) on page 71 is an article entitled
- "Ready, Compute, Aim". Always ready to test new ideas, my friend and I
- studied this article and followed the suggestions. We used a 50 cent
- protractor and an excellent compass in our test.
- Normally, we could ID only 3-4 deep space objects in 3 to 5 hours.
- (Remember--we are new with the scope and astronomy both!) The results
- are below using on the compass, protractor, and computations:
-
- First, we each took an area of the sky and using our SKY TRAVEL
- program...recorded the ELEVATION and AZIMUTH for each of several
- ofjects in our respective areas. The reading were taken for each hour
- beginning at 9:30 P.M. (arrival time). Having attached the protractor
- and compass as per directions, we QUICKLY found the following:
-
- Mars: dark spots and polar cap visible.
- Saturn: 3D clarity.
- The dark band in the rings was sharp with some marking on the
- surface of the planet.
- Triffid Nebula: Super!
- Lagoon Nebula: (M8) Outstanding!
- M4: Open star cluster near Antares
- M6: Great!
- M7: Wonderful!
- M11: star cluster..beautiful!
- Dumbell Nebula (M27): Superlative!
- M31: Andromeda Galaxy Awesome!
- + satellite galaxy.
- Antares:
- M15: Globular Cluster near Delphi
-
- All of this viewing was accomplished in a very short time because of
- the info in the above mentioned article. If you have a Dobsonian
- mount, I urge you to get and read the article. For a small investment,
- you can read, aim, and VIEW quickly any object...deep space or 'near
- by'!!!

- It's amazing if you look out over history and see just how much information
- was taken without question. People were content (most of them, anyway) with
- the explanations of "energy" transformation, and there are theories that use
- this info without really explaining the inner workings. It's like some people
- who buy a car, but don't know a thing about how it works. They can use it,
- but if strange things happen, they are unsure about how to explain it.
-
- Not to say that present theories are not useful, but we would be stupid to
- stop here. Scientists (some of them) are afraid of shaking the foundations of
- science to see how strong they are.

- Subject: Re: Accelerating Light
-
- Robert,
- If I may inject another few thoughts...
-
- As far as "shaking the foundations" of science, this was well
- put. There should be nothing wrong with REALLY demanding a lot from our
- present knowledge; we can only gain by it. However, I do understand the point
- of view that often, making guesses and assumptions is the only way to
- progress. If we only accepted the theories that Einstein himself could prove,
- and disregard his other accomplishments because they appeared to be just
- guesses and not fact, then we would not get too far. Many do not want to admit
- it, but science is run by non-perfect humans, and many discoveries came from
- hunches or assumptions. Sometimes something works, and finding out why is the
- other half of the learning process.
- So, your feelings about people not really explaining the transformation
- of energy, or how the Big Bang started, etc. are valid in the sense that we
- should strive to better define and understand just exactly what we're talking
- about. I'm sure this is being done all over the world. Sure it's nice to use
- nuclear energy, but how much more could we obtain if we really knew what was
- going on? Perhaps quite a bit! But in the meantime, we can only guess as to
- the Big Bang, but that does not make subsequent theories untrue: they MAY be
- wrong, they MAY be right.
-
- (Confused yet?)

- Jeff
